Ganta United Methodist Hospital

Dear Former Students and Friends of Ganta Mission:

This is to remind most of us and to inform those who have not heard about the new Dr. George W. Harley Hospital which is under construction in Ganta.

Bishop John Innis and the Liberia Annual Conference have decided to build a new 100-bed hospital in Ganta. The old hospital will be used for administration, a nursing school and an outpatient clinic.

The Bishop asked me to Chair an Ad Hoc Committee to help raise funds to support the construction of the new hospital in Ganta. The Bishop joined us in a teleconference and was able to explain the project and answer questions from members of the Association. He was not able to join us for the Alumni Association reunion which was scheduled for 14 – 16 July 2006 due to prior church commitments in Asia.

At the reunion in Philadelphia, I presented a working paper on the Bishop’s Ad Hoc Committee for the New G.W. Harley Hospital. The working paper is posted on our website. The Association enthusiastically adopted the following course of action:

  • Each member will contribute at least $200 to the new hospital project. Mechanism for making these donations can be found in the discussion paper.
  • Members should work towards having their donations in no later than December 15, 2006. This will enable us to have a report for the Liberia Annual Conference when it meets in February 2007.
  • Members who want to give special gifts in memory of parents are encouraged to do so
  • While the above will cover individual donations, fundraising activities and support from local churches will be explored.

Our decision was communicated to the Bishop who was elated that we had decided to become part of this very important effort of the Church to continue to serve our people. We are therefore appealing to all those who have not yet done so, to please send in their donations. “Let us not be weary in doing good”

Donations are to be made using money order, such as US Postal Money Order. Fill in the right hand side with your name and mailing address. On the left side, write “For a New George W. Harley Hospital”. Mail it to me and I will forward the money order to The Board of Global Ministries who will write you and acknowledge your gift. There are about forty members of the Ways and Means Committee and any one of them would gladly receive your donation. They are listed on the website. If the donations pass through us, we are better able to gauge the results of our efforts. My mailing address is: 340 Wickerberry Lane, Roswell, GA 30075.

Urgent Reminder: 11-05-06

Fellow Former Students and Friends of Ganta;

This is to bring to your urgent attention that in July, the Alumni Association voted that each member would contribute at least $200.00 to the fund for building the New G. W. Harley Hospital in Ganta. These funds were to be collected by October or latest by the end of the year. If we accept that there are about 300 former students in the US, only less than 2% have made their donations so far. I am therefore appealing to the national officers, the regional leadership, the Ways and Means Committee and the membership to make every effort so that we can meet the commitment we made to our people back home. We have had a lot of financial burdens this year, some planned and some the result of tragedy in the community. Let us now resolve to focus on this project and bring it to a successful conclusion.

Here is how you can make your donation. Get a US Postal Money Order. Make it in favor of "A New George W. Harley Hospital". Fill in the section with your name and address. This is important because you will get a thank you letter from The Board of Global Ministries. For record purposes, send the money order to one of these addresses and we will forward it to General Board of Global Ministries in New York. Ways and Means Committee members can also receive donations and forward same.

Ms Fannia Boayue, 935 Pinecrest Drive, Apt. C1, Cumberland, MD 21502. She is financial secretary to the Ways and Means.

Dr. Wilfred S. Boayue, 340 Wickerberry Lane, Roswell, GA 30075

Best wishes and anticipating your positive response,

We have had inquiries from members who would like to make special donations so that a unit of the hospital or part of a unit can be dedicated to a loved one. For those members, the above estimates should come in handy as they decide what they want to do.

It should be noted that some of the units listed have more than one room. In fact there are some that could have up to ten rooms. In such a case one might be talking about a tenth of the total cost listed for a unit.

Some individuals have also expressed the desire to purchase equipment for units in which their loved ones worked. This will also be welcomed and arrangements can be made to acknowledge such contributions.

I am therefore urging those who intend to make such special donations to submit their proposals so that we can workout the details with the Bishop. This will enable them to know ahead of time exactly how much their commitment is going to cost.

Dear Friends of Ganta Mission:

Re:  Committees to Implement the Goal of the Bishop’s Ad Hoc
Committee for the New George W. Harley Hospital.

Attached is the proposed structure for the Bishop’s Ad Hoc Committee. Please note where you have been requested to serve. We hope you can help.

Although the Ad Hoc Committee will work with the Ganta Alumni Association, it does not propose to assume any of the duties of the standing committees of the association. These are the roles for the elected officials of the association.

You will note that in addition to members of the association, other friends of Ganta Mission have been asked to serve on some committees. We are also reaching outside of the association to request donations for the project.

The size of some committees may rightly be questioned. This was intentional. For example, the Ways and Means Committee is large because we want as many persons as possible to contact members of the association, local churches, and other friends of Ganta to contribute to the effort. This Committee is the workforce of the effort and welcomes all who want to help. Anyone who wants to serve on any committee should let us know. Since we are just coming together, it is difficult to know where our interests and strengths lie. We hope that all those who have been asked to serve will be able to do so. If you are unable to serve, or prefer another committee, let us know.

Nonprofit Question:  The Association is working on its nonprofit status. As far as the Ad Hoc Committee is concerned, this should not be a problem if we follow the Money Trail as suggested. We are working under the umbrella of the Board of Global Ministries of the UMC, and donations should be tax deductible. Each donor will get a letter from the Board, acknowledging the gift. Please send your donation as a US Postal money order, or a bank draft, both of which will have space for your name and address. Address it to: "A New Dr. George W. Harley Hospital", General Board of Global Ministries, The United Methodist Church, 475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10115. Once this has been done, follow the money trail. Send it to the Secretariat and me and we will attach a letter to the Board for it to be credited to the Liberia 2.41 Account.

UPDATE ON GEORGE WAY HARLEY HOSPITAL CONSTRUCTION EFFORTS
JUNE 19, 2006

Dear Friends,

The staff and administration of Ganta United Methodist Hospital is thankful to all who continue to assist in our efforts to build the George Way Harley Memorial Hospital. The construction project commenced in February and the first building under construction is the Out Patient Clinic. The projected time of completion is August 30, 2006.

Ganta Hospital continue to experience rapid growth and revitalization of its services since re-opening in April 2004 after an extended period of civil unrest destroyed most of its buildings. The hospital continues to experience a gradual upsurge in the number of persons seeking medical services as it struggle with meeting the challenges of a growing population.

The new hospital is an initiative of the Liberia Annual Conference, through its visionary Bishop, Dr. John Innis. The existing building complex was constructed during the forties, fifties, and sixties and can no longer accommodate the large numbers of patients attending the hospital. Also, today’s medical trends and treatment options requires a hospital with various specialized service areas.

The existing building continues to enable us provide affordable, Christ-centered medical treatment for poor, rural, subsistence farming families. However, the reality is that the layout does not lend itself to expansion. The laboratory is too small to cater to the various lab services we need today.. Given the land space where the hospital is located, it cannot be enlarged. The ward space is too small. Statistical information covering the last five years supports the need for 140 beds as opposed to the existing 92-bed capacity. Usually, the hospital must “create” bed space by placing mattresses on the floor. We have two surgical theaters, but the reality is that we need three.

During 2005, the hospital recorded services for 1,823 in-patients, 19,603 out-patients, and 1,884 surgical procedures. First quarter 2006 statistical data for in-patients, out patients, and surgical procedures is far above that of first quarter 2005.

The current hospital building will be used to house the School of Nursing and the Primary Health Care Dept, as well as other specialized medical related areas.

The new hospital construction is estimated at $1,000,000.00 (one million dollars). First UMC Peoria, Ill, donated $100,000.00 to enable the construction of the Out Patient Clinic. Bishop Innis informed Ganta Hospital that a businessman from Massillon, Ohio, who attended the Liberia 2006 Annual Conference, pledged $100,000.00 to be raised before the end of 2006. With this amount, another unit will be constructed. Methodist Health Care has pledged $50,000.00 to enable the construction of the surgical unit. The plan is to construct as funds become available.

The “future” has “caught up” with us. We are grateful for the continuous show of love and support and we are appealing for assistance to continue the building effort. We would certainly appreciate your donation towards this worthy cause.

Sincerely,
Mary Zigbuo, Administrator (email: umcliberia@yahoo.com)

New George W. Harley Hospital
Bishop’s Ad Hoc Committee

Bishop John G. Innis wrote a letter on June 18, 2005, to “Citizens and Friends of Nimba County”, requesting help to build a new G.W. Harley Hospital on Ganta Mission. In that letter he challenged former students of Ganta Mission to answer the call for help from an institution that has done so much for our people and us by donating generously to the cost of building the new hospital. He asked me to chair the efforts in mobilizing former students and friends of Ganta Mission to donate the project. He later appointed Mr. Clinton Vulu as co-chair.

The Ganta Methodist Hospital has been the major source of health care in a region with a catchment area of about half a million people since it opened in a hut in 1926. Over the years it has grown and expanded to about one hundred beds. It has an active outpatient department, provides outreach programs into the communities, and has a unit that cares for patients with Hansen’s disease. The hospital has a School of Nursing that is one of the best in the country.

During the nearly two decades of civil strife in Liberia, the hospital was looted on three separate occasions in 1990, 1994 and 2003. The 2003 incident was the most severe one when all hospital furniture, appliances and vehicles were looted. All hospital buildings sustained extensive physical damage, which are still requiring renovation.

After some basic repairs and renovation, the hospital opened its doors in April 2004 to provide services to the population, which had nowhere else to go for health care.

The Liberia Annual Conference Board of Health and Welfare had determined earlier on, the need for a new modern hospital to meet the growing health care needs of the population. Therefore, in August 2005, ground was broken for construction of a new 140-bed hospital on two and a half acres of land. The construction is estimated to cost in excess of 1.1 million US dollars. When completed, the new hospital will provide outpatient services, obstetric and gynecologic services, medical and surgical inpatient care, pediatric services, dental services, emergency ward, and a morgue. Local support has started and is being supplemented by international donations. It is hoped that the new hospital will be ready to start services in 2008.

The old hospital will continue to be very much needed after the new one is in operation. It will house the Winifred J. Harley School of Nursing, which started training nurses in the 1960s as a three-year diploma program. In 2002, the school was upgraded to a four-year bachelor degree program. Since then, enrollment is reported to have tripled. The original facilities for the school are no longer adequate and they are ready to overflow into the old hospital. The old hospital will also continue to provide prenatal and primary health care services.

What is our response?

We should not ignore any of the problems, but we should avoid the tendency to try to solve them all at once. Let us focus on what has been presented to us by the Bishop

Our objective is to raise _________________ towards building the new hospital at Ganta United Methodist Mission. (___ % of 1.1 million).

The Ganta Mission Spirit

Those of us who love Ganta Mission know that it is the microcosm of the Liberian society. The good educational program of Ganta attracts students from all over the country. The students are a diverse group: the rich and the poor, Christians, Moslems, Atheists. Yet we are accepted as we are and subjected to the same program without discrimination. We live together, work together and grow to love and respect each other for what we are, children of the Great Creator. The healing ministry also does not turn any one away because of religion, class or place of birth.

At this juncture in our history, let us return to the spirit of Ganta to help us heal the wounds of the past two decades, and build an opened, fair and just society. That process involves rebuilding what we destroyed. It involves going back to the goodness of our forefathers who lived together in peace.

We should plan to act now and act decisively. The ground has been broken and the work of construction is in progress. The goal is for the new hospital to open its doors in 2008. We must join the effort now and show that we are concerned about the health and welfare of our people.

The Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church will be having its Annual Conference in February 2007. Ganta Mission will be hosting the conference. The conference will, no doubt, be accessing the progress of the hospital project. This will be the appropriate time for us to make our first donation to the work. Let us, therefore, set the Annual Conference as the target date for the individual donations. We could have members of the association who will be in Liberia at the time represent us and make the donation on our behalf. I have been invited to attend the conference and will be happy to be joined by any member to present such a donation. Of course, we are responsible for our individual travel expenses.

This is the challenge! Let us not be found wanting. Let us move forward and answer the call!

Dear Former Students and Friends of Ganta Mission:

We just completed a rather successful reunion of Ganta Mission School Alumni Association--USA in Philadelphia from 14th to 16th July 2006. We are grateful to the committee for working so hard to make this possible.

Attached is a copy of the working paper I presented to the meeting on the Bishop's Ad Hoc Committee on the New Hospital. The paper provides some information to facilitate action. The response of the Association to the paper was very positive. After a lengthy discussion, the association decided to take the following action: Each member will contribute at least $200 to the new hospital project. Mechanism for making these donations can be found in the discussion paper.

Members should work towards having their donations in no later than December 15, 2006. This will enable us to have a report for the Liberia Annual Conference when it meets in February 2007. Members who want to give special gifts in memory of parents are encouraged to do so

While the above will cover individual donations, fundraising activities and support from local churches will be explored. Please pass this information on to friends who do not have access to the Internet. We will try to send hard copies to those who do not have email addresses and for whom we can locate a home address. If you have access to any such addresses, please pass them on.
